Apprenticeships and NVQs - Northern Ireland
Apprenticeships
The apprenticeship schemes on offer are respected by employers and include the Apprenticeship leading to a NVQ Level 2 (mechanical) or a Modern Apprenticeship leading to a NVQ Level 3 (electrical and mechanical). Both are designed to ensure that when you are qualified you will have all the skills needed to do the professional and highly skilled work expected of you on site.
Both apprenticeship programmes also include essential skills and a technical certificate, which are designed to ensure that you receive all the underpinning knowledge you will require in the workplace. You must be employed to enter into the industry on any of the apprenticeship schemes.
It is important that you are prepared for your career in building services engineering and the training you will receive. You will be expected to have a good level of education, at least 16 points. You may also be required to sit an aptitude test.
National Vocational Qualifications
NVQs form the core of the Modern Apprenticeship and are the minimum level of competence if you want to progress within the sector.
In the careers information section you can download Northern Ireland fact sheets for each the various industries.
