"In training you shouldn't ever stand still"

Tony McCreath is the owner/manager of McCreath Heating and Plumbing and has won an industry award for his training. He tells us how training himself and gaining an NVQ has given him more confidence in his work

Q. Tell us something about your business.

A. In 2006 I set up McCreath Heating and Plumbing, specialising in all aspects of plumbing, heating and gas installations. I’m still as enthusiastic about the work as when I first started out in the industry!

Q. So what was it that really launched your career?

A. I got the chance to sign up for an NVQ level 2 in Plumbing and soon went on to complete a level 3. Since then, I have also gained electrical Part P and gas ACS.  Having these qualifications finally convinced me that I had the skills and knowledge I needed to start up on my own and also continue my business successfully.

Q. Are there any projects that really stick in your mind?

A One memorable job was a 300-year old dwelling up in the hills of Wales. The walls were one meter thick and all the floors were at different heights.  It was a very challenging installation but I completed it successfully and the customer was delighted with the result.

Q. Do you think it’s important for small firms to provide training?

A. I think it’s essential. It was gaining my NVQs that really gave me confidence in my knowledge of the industry.  Qualifications are a way of demonstrating that you’ve got more than just experience.  I was delighted to win an Adult Trainee of the Year award and I’m proud of the top-up training I’ve recently completed.  I firmly believe that in terms of training you shouldn’t ever stand still.

Q. And finally – what does a good day at work mean to you?

A. Job satisfaction is all about knowing that I’ve done a good job – that I’ve worked to the very best of my abilities and that I’m leaving behind a happy customer.
